Nysmith sends more students to TJ every year. It’s very good. Potomac is also a good school. Some Longfellow students turn down TJ to attend Potomac. Flint Hill is also good.

Mr. Zwerneman has been Headmaster of Trinity School at Meadow View for 10 years and has been with Trinity Schools since 1983. In addition, he continues to teach the 12th grade boys’ Humane Letters class. His credentials include an M.A. in Government and International Relations from the University of Notre Dame, an M.A. in Catholic Doctrine from St. John’s University and a B.A. in History from the University of Notre Dame.

Basic Background: Trinity School at Meadow View, a coed, independent, private school offering a core curriculum for students in grades seven through twelve, is a candidate for accreditation by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS). Founded in 1998, the Meadow View campus is the third in a national line of acclaimed Trinity Schools; the first campus opened in 1981 in South Bend, Indiana, the second in the Twin Cities area, Minnesota in 1986. The Meadow View campus saw its first senior class graduate in 2002. By the end of 2008 we expect to announce plans for campus development.

Mission Statement: The mission of Trinity School is to impart basic ordered knowledge about the world and to train students in basic intellectual skills and qualities of mind so that they might be of use to God in the wise care and governance of His creation and in the building of His kingdom. We accomplish this by establishing a culture marked by the discovery of truth, the practice of goodness, the creation of beauty, and the development of intellectual and aesthetic habits of mind. Trinity School at Meadow View is a community of learners engaged in the rigorous exploration of reality, the free and disciplined exchange of ideas, and the active participation in the fine arts.

Teacher/Student Information: The total student population for the 2008-2009 school year is 135 students. Our teacher/student ration is 9:1.

Testing: TSMV does not administer SOLs, the Virginia Standards of Learning tests required in the public schools. However, 10th through 12th grade students do take the PSAT and SATs and as of 2008, 6.6% of TSMV seniors have attained National Merit Finalist status, compared to the national average of slightly more than 1%.

Enrichment/Education Vision: The educational foundation of Trinity School at Meadow View is characterized by the cultivation of the intellect: that is, cultivation of both true knowledge and sound habits of mind. The three essentials of all education structure the Trinity School curriculum: ordered basic knowledge, basic skills or tools learning, and the habitual vision of greatness. These essentials of education must be appropriated through analysis, evaluation, use of the imagination and like operations of the mind. The educational method of Trinity School is designed to encourage the active involvement of the student in the learning process. Rather than receiving knowledge passively, each student must actively apprehend concepts and relationships. This education, therefore, is both disciplined and demanding; it is, moreover, effective in unlocking the potential of each student.
The core curriculum includes Science, Math, Literature/Composition, Humane Letters, Latin, Modern Language, History, Religion, Art/Art History, Drama and Music. Trinity School at Meadow View is one of three schools nationally to use Matlab at the high school level.
After-school activities include a year-round sports program for boys and girls (Soccer, Basketball, Lacrosse, Volleyball, Cross-Country) as well as after-school music and drama programs, Yearbook and Trinity Life, our student service organization.
Parents are encouraged to become actively involved with the school through the Parent Service Association (PSA), but volunteer hours are not required.

Tuition: For the 2009-2010 school year, tuition for 7th and 8th grade students will be $13,800; for 9th through 12th grade it will be $14,200. The school has financial aid available. Once you fill out our Fast Track financial aid form, you will be informed of your financial aid package within two weeks of submission.

Regional Makeup: Although a few students attend Trinity School at Meadow View from the Suburban Maryland and District of Columbia area, most students live in Northern Virginia. Trinity also has a few international students and, in the past, has hosted foreign exchange students.

What makes your school unique? What makes it stand out from the other similar private schools?

• All literature—fictional and non-fictional—is taught Socratically. We place a high value on the student developing careful reading and active discussion skills.
The Socratic format significantly fosters discovery as well.
• Math and science are integrated. For example, we teach Matlab—a computer
coding language. In turn, the students use Matlab to develop models for solving
problems in physics and calculus.
• Our fine arts curriculum is performance based and is participated in by all
students. Each Trinity student composes and performs music, paints and draws,
and acts on stage in productions of classic dramas.
• Trinity is small but dynamic. There is an unusually high level of participation
on the sports teams and in the student organization –Trinity Life. Over 90% of
our students play at least one sport for the school 100% of the students
participate in Trinity Life, by which they actively build the culture of the school
and shape the community to which they belong.
• The school has few rules, but there is a vital ethos of charity, respect, and
cooperation. The faculty provides dynamic leadership as do the members of the upper grades. Each year, for example, the Senior class launches the year with a Senior Challenge where they and the faculty commit to work with each other to build the mission and where the Seniors in particular plan a series of contributions by which they will lead the student body, fostering friendship, school spirit, and
cultural advancements.

The atmosphere of the school is one of warmth, respect, courtesy, and purposefulness.
The students wear uniforms daily, and staff members observe a professional dress code.
Classes are small, ranging from 15-18 students, and children receive individual attention.
There is a carefully structured, thoroughly articulated curriculum in each subject which progresses smoothly from grade to grade.
Instruction is presented in a teacher-directed, orderly classroom environment that promotes thorough mastery of subject matter; critical thinking and clarity of articulation; responsible study and work habits; and a desire for excellence.
The program is departmentalized in grades 3-8, with specialists teaching all subjects.
Organizational skills and good study and work habits are taught and reinforced in every grade so that students learn how to learn.
Homework is assigned daily in all grades, with the total daily amount increasing gradually, from approximately 10 minutes in kindergarten to 2 ½ hours in 8th grade.
A regular schedule of quizzes, tests, and special projects is consistent from class to class and grade to grade. Teachers coordinate with one another to ensure a balanced study load.
Study-related and enrichment field trips are an important part of the program. Students enjoy an average of one field trip per month.
After-school help is provided Monday-Thursday for any student who may be struggling with a particular subject or who would like extra preparation before a test.

Curriculum at The New School is guided by the multiple intelligence theories of Howard Gardner. Gardner posits that there are eight (recently expanded from seven) distinctly recognizable intelligences that different people utilize. These are (in no particular order):

Naturalistic
Traditional schooling places an undue emphasis on the logical/mathematical and linguistic intelligences, often neglecting other abilities. In developing the IQ test early this century, Benet devised an instrument that was successful at predicting the scholastic success of children, but in a school system that relied primarily on the logical and linguistic intelligences. Clearly, there are those who succeed in life without the sole use of these intelligences: visual artists, whose spatial and kinesthetic abilities must be well-honed, or entrepeneurs, whose interpersonal skills may be their forte. Howard Gardner performed extensive research and reviews to identify which specific intelligences people use.
The New School incorporates MI theory at all grade levels. While several schools have used an MI approach in elementary grades, The New School considers itself pioneering in applying MI ideas in upper grades.
